Beetles Get Politically Prominent Names
Three recently-discovered slime beetles have been named after members of the current Bush Administration - Agathidium bushi Miller and Wheeler, Agathidium cheneyi Miller and Wheeler and Agathidium rumsfeldi Miller and Wheeler. The naming was said not to have been done because of physical resemblances.
Whale Making Its Way Downstream in River
A 10- to 12-foot white beluga whale appears to be making its way downstream after swimming 80 miles up the Delaware River. Officials are asking people to keep out of the way. In 1995 another whale, "Waldo the Wrong-Way Right Whale", spent about 10 days in the river.

Gov. Jim Doyle of Wisconsin has come out against a proposal to allow people to shoot feral cats.
USDA Denies Allegations of More Mad Cow Cases
The U.S. Agriculture Department has denied allegations that cases of mad cow disease in the United States might have been missed or covered up. One case was discovered in December 2003 and disclosed immediately.

Greenpeace employees have bought genetically modified rice in markets in the central Chinese province of Hubei. The rice has not been approved for sale there, though trials are taking place.
Beer giant threatens boycott over 'medicinal' grain
Anheuser-Busch has announced that it will not buy rice from Missouri if genetically-modified medicinal crops are allowed to be grown in the state, for fear of contamination. Other companies are also against biotechnology firms being allowed to plant genetically modified crops there. Other states are seeing similar conflicts.
Cleanup Crews Respond to Alaska Spill
A spray of about 1.4 million cubic feet of natural gas plus some crude oil has been accidentally released at a BP Prudhoe Bay drilling site. Crews are working to clean it up.
There has been an oil spill in the Arctic too, forcing the shut down of an oil drilling rig belonging to Norway's Statoil.
U.N. Presses India to Save Tigers
The United Nations is urging India to accept help to save tigers, the largest cats, from extinction. A combination of poaching and conflict with people has made the tigers' plight perilous.
